Agim Hushi

Agim Hushi graduated at the Albanian Academy of Arts in 1991 and was immediately signed as principal tenor with the Albanian State Opera where he appeared as Cavardossi (Tosca), Turiddu (Cavalleria Rusticana) and Manrico (Il Trovatore). From 1992 until 1995 Agim Hushi continued his studies at the Franz Liszt Academy of Music in Budapest. He was appointed principal tenor with the Hungarian State Opera where he sang Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut), Calaf (Turandot), Luigi ( Il Tabarro) and Oronte (I Lombardi).

In 1997 Hushi was invited to sing Des Grieux (Manon Lescaut) with the Adelaide State Opera under the baton of Richard Bonynge who said ‘in my entire experience working with Agim Hushi has been a wonderful discovery’. As a result of his success in Adelaide Hushi made his debut at the Sydney Opera House in Manon Lescaut. He made a great impression; one critic compared him to Beniamino Gigli. These Australian appearances were followed by recitasl in Wellington, Christchurch and Auckland, New Zealand followed by more appearances in Australia: Adelaide, Tenin Creek, Alice Springs, Darwin and Melbourne. In 1999 Agim Hushi studied with Franco Corelli for six months in Milan. Corelli wrote ‘Agim Hushi has a very rare tenor voice, strong and beautiful. He deserves an international career’.

In 2000 in Australia Agim Hushi was declared Emerging Artist of 2000 and was also winner of the Jan Potter Foundation Award. He took part in a recital tour around Australia as part of the government sponsored Promoting the Classics programme.

In 2001 Hushi was appointed Artistic Advisor of the Singapore Lyric Opera and professor of singing at the National University of Singapore.
During the next few years Hushi sang in opera and recital in South East Asia, including Tosca in Kuala Lumpur and Calaf in Malaysia and Thailand. During 2003-4 he sang in recitals in Brunei, Malaysia, Singapore and Adelaide. He also gave a recital in Athens in 2005. At the World Opera Festival 2005 in Cheboksary, Russia he sang Manrico and appeared in a gala concert with the stars of the Bolshoi Opera.

Since 2005 Agim Hushi has been principal tenor with the Albanian State Opera singing Calaf and Cavaradossi and appearing in recital. He sang Radames (Aida) in Tirana and Turiddu (Cavalleria rusticana) in Sofia, both in 2007. In 2007 he also appeared in recitals in Vienna, Copenhagen and Sofia.
Agim Hushi currently lives in Vienna where he is Head of the Opera Department at the Vienna Conservatoire. Mr Hushi speaks English, Italian and Hungarian and is an Australian citizen.
